Five lecturers from the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries (FIKP) at Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) took part in a workshop entitled “Building Collective Efforts to Support Coral Reef Monitoring in Indonesia,” held in Jakarta on 9 April 2026. The five lecturers were Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa, Prof. Rohani Ambo Rappe, Dr. Syafyudin Yusuf, Jamaluddin Fitrah Alam, Ph.D., and Ms. Amanda Pricella Putri.

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), in collaboration with the Australian Embassy and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) of the Republic of Indonesia, and working together with Southeast Asian countries, aims to strengthen coral reef monitoring and management. This initiative is supported by funding from the Marine Resources Initiative (MRI) of the Australian Government. The workshop marks an initial step (scoping) in designing a strategic collaboration for the development of a coral reef monitoring system in Indonesia for the next phase.

Representatives from UNHAS, particularly through the Coral Reef Rehabilitation & Sustainability Research Group (CORES) and the Seagrass Restoration and Ecosystem Services Research Group (SESREG), actively contributed to discussions about current conditions, challenges, and the direction for developing data-driven coral reef monitoring.

The event was officially opened by Australian Embassy representative Ryan Cunningham, who emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in maintaining the sustainability of marine ecosystems, especially coral reefs, which have high ecological and economic value for the Southeast Asian region.

This workshop aimed to align various stakeholders, identify opportunities for collaboration, and formulate strategic steps to support evidence-based monitoring and management of coral reefs. Moreover, the event served as a platform to co-design a long-term program (2026–2030) that will strengthen monitoring capacity through data integration and the use of digital technology.

The active participation of FIKP UNHAS lecturers in this international forum demonstrates UNHAS’s commitment to supporting sustainable marine resource management and enhancing global collaborative networks in coral reef research.
