The Tourism Study Program of Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) successfully conducted an engaging lecture session titled English for Tourism, featuring Abelardo R. Cruz Jr. as the main speaker. The session was held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, via Zoom and was hosted by Dr. Dirk Sandarupa, M. Hum., MCE. During the session, students were introduced to the importance of English proficiency in the global tourism industry. Abelardo R. Cruz Jr. emphasized that English is not only a communication tool but also a gateway to international career opportunities and improved service quality.

Dr. Dirk Sandarupa facilitated an interactive learning environment, encouraging students to actively participate through discussions, questions, and critical responses related to real-world tourism contexts. The session covered topics such as global communication, customer service, employment opportunities, and the use of digital platforms in language learning. In addition, Abelardo highlighted the importance of neuroplasticity as a fundamental concept in language learning.

According to Abelardo, neuroplasticity is essential for identifying and improving students’ English proficiency levels. He explained that neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change, adapt, and form new neural connections in response to learning and experience. In simple terms, the brain “rewires” itself when learning something new—such as English. Through this understanding, students are encouraged to practice consistently, actively engage in class, and not be afraid of making mistakes, as these are crucial parts of the learning process.

This session emphasized not only theoretical knowledge but also active participation as a key factor in improving communication skills. Through active involvement, students are expected to build confidence and be better prepared for the global tourism industry. In conclusion, the session reinforced that active student participation is essential in achieving effective and meaningful learning outcomes.
